Most people support school and workplace vaccination mandates as the Delta variant spreads

PROVO, Utah and SEATTLE, August 17, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Majority of Parents and Employees Support Immunization Mandates During Return to Work and In-Person Learning, New Research From Qualtrics (Nasdaq: XM), Category Leader and Creator experience management (XM). The new studies found that 51% of parents support the requirement of proof of vaccination for children attending K-12 school and 60% of employees would support if their employer required vaccines for in-person work.

Even as cases of COVID multiply, returning employees to the office and students to classrooms is a priority for many, after a year of blended learning and virtual collaboration. But not everyone agrees on the safest way to achieve this.

Among parents entering another school year, 61% support the requirement for masks in the classroom. Conversely, nearly a quarter (24%) of parents would consider removing a child from school if they had to carry one. (The results of the back-to-school study can be found here)

As companies contemplate new labor policies, vaccine rules could ultimately be the deciding factor in deciding whether some workers decide to stay with a company or leave, with nearly a quarter of employees (23 %) stating that they would strongly consider leaving their workplace if their employers required vaccines. Key points from the Qualtrics study:

  • Parents are divided on the masks: 61% of parents support requiring masks for children attending K-12 school while almost a quarter (24%) of parents would consider removing a child from school if they are required to wear a mask, and 11% are unsure.
  • A majority of parents plan to have their children vaccinated: About half of the parents (52%) say they will immunize their children when the vaccine is approved for children under 12. Additionally, 31% of parents rank immunization mandates for students and teachers as their top safety priority.
  • Technical staff most likely to support immunization mandates: Technicians are among the most supportive of vaccine requirements at work with 75% saying they support vaccine requirements (vs. 59% of retailers and 58% of government)
  • Respondents broadly support vaccination mandates for public events: More than half of those surveyed support the vaccine requirements for people on airplanes, people attending large public events, higher education students attending classes / living on campus and children attending schools. Methodology

Back to school: This study was conducted between July 28-30, 2021. Respondents were considered eligible if they lived United States, are at least 18 years old and are parents of children between the ages of 5 and 18. The total number of respondents was 1,025. Respondents who did not pass the quality standards were removed.

Vaccination mandates: This study was conducted between August 2 – August 5, 2021. Respondents were considered eligible if they lived United States, are at least 21 years old and employed full or part time. The total number of respondents was 1,051. Respondents who did not pass the quality standards were removed. The study looked at age, sex, race, industry, political affiliation, education level and marital status.
